Can We Talk About Dog Breeding?

Countless conversations at the dinner table have begun with this earnest request from one of our children. It is usually followed with, "Sure, what would you like to talk about?" The reply might be, "I want to talk about taking care of the dogs," or "I want to talk about selling the puppies," or even "I want to talk about getting another dog." No matter how these conversations begin, they are always lively and enriching.

Our story begins in 2023 when we purchased Maverick and Gretta, two Golden Retriever puppies. After carefully considering breeders from Kentucky to Illinois, we selected Maverick from a breeder of gentle, healthy, well-proportioned Goldens and Gretta, whose breeder is painstakingly selective in which dogs they chose to breed. Gretta comes from a champion bloodline.

These two have been steadfast companions to our children, protectors of our chickens, and constant sources of joy and sometimes, minor frustrations (we've lost some shoes, gloves and hats to these two!) Their dispositions are both different, but equally gentle.

Maverick is a sponge for affection. He loves to be petted and played with has a bit of a jealous streak whenever Gretta is the one receiving attention.

"Gretta Girl," as she is affectionately known, is more laid back but just as curious and loving as Maverick. She will lay calmly when the young kids pull her tail, smother her with hugs or try to ride her like their own little horse.

Our Dogs

Our dogs are purebred Golden Retrievers, registered with the American Kennel Club. They have received their vaccinations and are cared for by a veterinarian who is located about five minutes from where we live.

They both have deep, red coats and are able to maintain very active, outdoor lives on our two-acre parcel. Plenty of running around and going for walks with us helps to maintain their good health.

We waited to breed Gretta to give her body time to mature completely and we will give her the necessary breaks in between breeding cycles so as not to endanger her health. Our goal is to breed healthy dogs that possess the same gentle, curious, eager-to-please dispositions as their parents.

About Us

We are a family-owned breeder located in Crittenden, Kentucky. With five children, a flock of chickens and our dogs, there is always much going on and much to do.

My wife and I grew up around dogs and her parents trained and showed dogs professionally. We both wanted our children to experience the joy that dogs bring.

We decided to move into breeding to help us teach our children about responsibility and caring for animals, as well as to help others experience the joy of dog ownership.

Why "Roch Breeding?"

We named our breeding business Roch Breeding after St. Roch, who is the patron saint of dogs. When St. Roch was caring for victims of the plague, he contracted the disease himself and withdrew to a remote location with the intention of allowing himself to die.

A local nobleman's hunting dog found him there and began bringing him scraps of bread from his master's table. The dog also provided emotional support which encouraged the saint to persevere. After some time, the nobleman followed his dog to see where he was going and was led to the Saint. With the nobleman's help, St. Roch recovered from the disease and was returned to health. He lived for years afterward.

This story of a dog being used as an instrument of God's mercy and compassion is inspiring and we thought it epitomized the spirit of companionship, protection, and care that dogs, at their best, can demonstrate. We want to do our part to promote, encourage and enkindle this spirit for others to experience.
